A refreshing, crisp wine with aromas of jasmine, apple and citrus fruits on the nose, and green apple with subtle hints of peach and minerality on the palate. This is a well-balanced wine which can be enjoyed by itself, with seafood, white meat, a vegetable dish or light risotto.
Though it is not easy to find Commandaria in the UK, it is well worth tracking down!

The Athénée Palace is an excellent hotel in a very central location and just a 15-minute walk from the Old Town. The rooms were recently renovated and are very comfortable. The staff are very helpful and efficient, the hotel restaurant Roberto’s serves excellent Italian food and the service is very attentive.
The historic English Bar in the hotel is a great place to wind down in a cosy atmosphere. Just around the corner from the hotel you can enjoy traditional Romanian food and wine in La Mama restaurant – very good service and very reasonably priced. And quite close by is a cosy wine bar, Wine Ambassador, where you can enjoy snacks and a choice of Romanian wines, as well as whisky from around the world.
All in all, a very comfortable hotel in a great location. Highly recommended.
We had a wonderful stay at the Athens Gate Hotel in the run-up to Christmas. The hotel is in a perfect location, right in the heart of Athens and close to the Plaka neighbourhood. The Temple of Zeus is opposite the hotel, the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum are literally around the corner, and Syntagma Square with the Greek Parliament Building is a ten-minute walk away. The rooms are clean and comfortable – those facing the Acropolis are quieter – and the friendly and helpful staff gave us lots of useful advice about getting around the city to see the sights.
The restaurant on the 8th floor offers stunning views of the Temple of Zeus and the Acropolis at breakfast and dinner, and is not to be missed. The quality of the food is very good and the service is very attentive.
We will definitely stay here again on our next visit to Athens.
For traditional Greek food, try O Thanasis in Monastiraki Square, and Ta Karamanlidikka, near the Central Market. And for a wine bar offering a great choice of Greek wines, Wine O’clock, just a couple of streets away on Lempesi Street, is a little gem.

Vavasour Sauvignon Blanc 2021, Awatere Valley (New Zealand)
If you enjoyed the Grove Mill Sauvignon Blanc 2021 I recently reviewed, you might like to try this Vavasour Sauvignon Blanc 2021. Although part of Foley Wines, the same group as Grove Mill, the Vavasour Sauvignon Blanc comes from the Awatere Valley in Marlborough, a smaller, cooler, windier and drier valley than the region’s main winegrowing valley, Wairau Valley.
The Sauvignon Blanc wines from the Awatere Valley tend to have higher acidity, with more herbaceous characteristics, and lack the tropical fruit flavours which are often found in wines from the Wairau Valley.
This Vavasour Sauvignon Blanc 2021 is an elegant, refreshing wine with notes of citrus and peach on the nose leading to stone fruit flavours and a pleasant minerality on the palate. It is a wine with alively acidity, a creamy mouthfeel and a long finish, which is perfect as an aperitif, or with a seafood or white meat dish. It also goes well with goat cheese.

This Vinho Regional Alentejano is a very good value wine from south-eastern Portugal. A blend of Trincadeira, Aragonês (Tempranillo) and Syrah grapes, it is a full-bodied, elegant wine with medium tannins and a lengthy finish.

Winner of the International Wine Challenge (IWC) Bronze Medal in 2021 for this 2019 vintage, this is a very well-balanced wine which can be enjoyed by itself or with a meat, pasta or roasted vegetable dish.
