A refreshing Riesling from the banks of the Mosel

With honeysuckle, jasmine and apple on the nose, and apple, gooseberry, pear and a hint of honey on the palate, this refreshing Riesling from vineyards along the Mosel demonstrates excellent quality and value. 

The residual sugar and fruity acidity are well-balanced and the wine has a clean, lingering finish. 

It is a wine that can be enjoyed as a refreshing apéritif or with seafood, chicken or a salad dish. It will also go well with Asian cuisine.

A little gem from New Zealand 

Main Divide, Riesling 2019 (New Zealand)

Although we might automatically think of Germany when we think of Riesling, the grape is very adaptable and is grown in many different parts of the world. With a preference for cooler, more temperate environments, it is quite at home in the Waipara Valley region on New Zealand’s South Island. And this Main Divide 2019 is a fine example of New Zealand Riesling. 

With floral, honey, orange peel notes on the nose and flavours of citrus fruits, nectarine and honey on the palate, this is an off-dry wine with lively acidity and an unexpected but very pleasant spritzig touch to it. A medium-bodied, well-balanced wine with a long finish, it will go well with seafood, duck or a slightly spicy Asian-inspired dish.

Eight Thousand Lakes 2019 Riesling (USA)

Although we might automatically think of Germany when we think of Riesling, the grape is very adaptable and is grown in many different parts of the world. The common denominator is its preference for cooler, more temperate environments, where the longer growing times enable the grapes to retain their characteristic acidity as they ripen. The Ancient Lakes region of Columbia Valley in Washington State is one such environment.

Here, the higher elevation, relatively low rainfall, cooler climate and wider diurnal temperatures help preserve acidity in the grapes, and this high acidity is a signature characteristic of wines from this region.

The Eight Thousand Lakes 2019 Riesling is a very good example of a fresh, vibrant, aromatic Riesling. It’s an off-dry wine with refreshing acidity and has aromas of apple, pear and honey on the nose, and lemon and peach flavours with a touch of minerality on the palate. A smooth wine with a long finish, it can be drunk by itself or paired with seafood or a slightly spicy Asian dish. We had it with salmon with a Japanese twist and it went down a treat.

Somborne Estate Reserve Red 2014 (England)

One of the things I enjoy most about exploring English and Welsh wines is the opportunity to try unusual grape varieties. And if you’re looking for a little treat to help you get into gear as we start 2022, this delightful Rondo wine from Somborne Valley Vineyard in Hampshire, ticks all the boxes.

Rondo is a hybrid grape variety, created in 1964 when Zarya Severa, a grape variety of Russian origin, was crossed with St Laurent from Austria. Given its hardiness and high resistance to winter frost, it generally fares well in Northern Europe and is widely cultivated in the UK. It typically produces rich, deeply-coloured wines with good fruit flavours. This one is no exception.

Deep ruby in colour, this is a rich, smooth, medium-bodied wine. It has blackberry, plum and black cherry aromas, with notes of cinnamon and vanilla, on the nose, and rich black fruit flavours with savoury notes on the palate. It is a wine with depth and complexity, and very well-balanced.

This is a wine to sit and relax with, or to enjoy with lamb chops, beef casserole or your favourite cheese.

Domaine la Hitaire ‘Les Tours’ 2019 (France)

Quite apart from the obvious choices, France is a wine region that never fails to surprise and delight. And Gascony in southwest France is a quiet corner of the country that punches above its size. Here you can find a real abundance of interesting and unusual grape varieties, and this blend of Ugni Blanc, Colombard and Gros Manseng is a little gem. 

The three grape varieties complement each other very well. Ugni Blanc is a relatively bland grape variety on its own but in a blend, can contribute its natural acidity and floral notes. Colombard brings with it flavours of peach and nectarine and Gros Manseng is an aromatic grape variety bringing crisp, faintly spicy flavours to a blend.

This is a dry wine with relatively low alcohol and a crisp, refreshing acidity. It has aromas of lemon, grapefruit and apple, with floral and herbaceous notes on the nose, and flavours of peach, nectarine and lychee, with a hint of spice on the palate.  Well-balanced with a long finish, this is a perfect apéritif wine, and will go well with goat’s cheese, seafood, or a slightly spicy dish.

Tim Adams Clare Valley Riesling 2020

Although we might automatically think of Germany when we think of Riesling, the grape is very adaptable and is grown in many different parts of the world. The common denominator is its preference for cooler, more temperate environments, where the longer growing times enable the grapes to retain their characteristic acidity as they ripen. Clare Valley in Australia is one such environment.

And while we might associate Australia with a hot, dry climate, that is only half the story. The warm climate in South Australia’s Clare Valley is tempered by cool afternoon breezes and cold nights and many vineyards are planted at relatively high altitudes of up to 570 metres. This can result in the production of very elegant examples of Riesling, which are dry in style, with lime and citrus aromas, and high acidity.

This Tim Adams Clare Valley Riesling 2020 is a very good example of a fresh, vibrant, refreshing Riesling. It’s a dry wine with quite high acidity and floral characteristics, with lime, grapefruit and apple on the nose, and peach flavours with a slight minerality on the palate. It has a long finish and can be drunk by itself or with seafood, salad or chicken dish.

There’s so much more to Australian wines than Shiraz and Chardonnay – here are a couple of little gems to try.

The days of associating Australian wine with cheap plonk are long gone and while there are some excellent examples of Australian Shiraz and Chardonnay available today, the country has a lot more to offer the discerning wine drinker.  And with Australian wine growers at the forefront of innovation and experimentation, this diversity will continue to grow as new regions, and different grape varieties and wine styles are explored and developed.

Son of a Bull Riesling 2019

Take Tasmanian Riesling for example. Although we rightly associate Riesling with Germany, Tasmania has ideal conditions for growing the grape. It has a cool maritime climate, aided by the westerly winds off the Southern Ocean, but at the same time it gets plenty of sunshine. This results in a long, reasonably cool growing season and enables the grapes to retain their acidity as they ripen.  

This Son of a Bull Riesling (2019) from Pipers River is a dry wine and has aromas of blossom, apple, lime and grapefruit on the nose, and flavours of lime, apple, grapefruit and spice, with a hint of residual sugar, on the palate. A lively, fresh, well-balanced and medium-bodied wine with medium (+) acidity and a long finish with a pleasant minerality. A very good example of a Tasmanian Riesling, this is a delicate and refreshing wine, a perfect match for seafood or a Thai dish.

Rutherglen Topaque

Although it’s fair to say the modern Australian wine scene is vibrant and exciting, wine production in the country has been going on for generations. The first vines arrived in 1788 but most of the early plantings proved unsuccessful. However, by the 1840s wine production had begun to rise in many parts of southern Australia and wine exports to the UK began in the 1850s. The country hasn’t looked back since and one successful wine producer, now in its fifth generation, has been producing rich sweet wines for over 150 years. 

The Campbells have been producing wine in Rutherglen, N E Victoria since 1840 and if you have tried their Rutherglen Muscat, you will know how successful they have been. The Rutherglen Topaque is outstanding and won Gold in the Decanter World Wine Awards 2020.

This is a lusciously sweet wine made from Muscadelle grapes. With aromas of toffee, honey and tea leaf, and flavours of treacle, caramel, nuttiness and honey on the palate, this is pure bottled indulgence. A smooth, complex wine, well-balanced with a clean finish, the Topaque is a perfect match for treacle tart, fruit-based desserts and blue cheese; indeed, it is also perfect by itself as a chilled aperitif or after-dinner digestif.
